Behind Brave + Beautiful

An editorial approach was always going to make sense.

Long before Brave + Beautiful, I studied magazine journalism.

I learned to think in stories—to consider not only what needed to be said, but what deserved emphasis. How words and images could work together. How pacing could change the way something was experienced. How editing wasn't simply about making something shorter, but making what remained matter more.

Around the same time, I taught myself web design.

That was twenty years ago.

The internet has changed almost beyond recognition since then, but the things that make communication meaningful haven't changed nearly as much.

Tell a good story.

Know what matters.

Give it room.

Edit the rest.

Those ideas eventually became the foundation for Brave + Beautiful.

Somewhere between a website and a publication.

I love beautiful websites. But beauty alone has never felt like enough.

A website can have perfect typography, gorgeous photography, and all the right trends—and still leave you knowing remarkably little about the business behind it.

Brave + Beautiful approaches websites differently.

I think about them the way I once learned to think about magazines.

There should be rhythm.

Some photographs deserve to be enormous. Some words deserve to stand alone.

Longer stories should have room to unfold.

There should be moments of information and moments of pause.

Every page should have a purpose, but not every inch needs to be filled.

And when someone reaches the end, they should understand something they didn't when they arrived.

The goal isn't simply to make your business look beautiful. It's to make what is beautiful about your business easier to see.

That's the philosophy behind the Editorial Collection.

Beautiful shouldn't mean complicated.

There is another idea at the heart of Brave + Beautiful.

You should be able to do this.

You shouldn't need to understand web design to have a thoughtful website. And you shouldn't purchase a beautiful template only to open it and wonder what on earth you're supposed to put in all those empty spaces.

That's why our templates don't end with the design.

They're accompanied by thoughtful guidance that helps you identify the stories you want to tell, choose the work you want to show, find the words you need, gather the right imagery, and understand the design decisions you're making along the way.
